I also have spotify connected and I control it using the homebridge-applescript-file plugin. The animations are more complex that a colorloop. I could attach them to philips switches. No need to have an app in foreground or background. I can use Siri to start my custom scene (animation with ambient music). The reason to delegate the animation in a plugin (that is executed in a raspberry pi) rather than an existing app is that: I created a plugin that when activated, it sends about 10 network requests per second (using node-hue-api) to modify lights values. Thanks for reply already have a proof of concept working.

Logitech don't make or support it anymore, but the opensource community is still very active. But when you get it sorted, it is kinda cool. But be warned, it is a whole new can of worms to have to try and work out. Have a look at Logitech Media Server and SqueezePlay, as these run on the Pi and also connected to Spotify.

So for the music thing I guess you would use AppleScript (there is a homebridge plugin for that) or another other means to tell your Mac to do something.

In the app you give the scene a name ,then tell it what you want on and off etc. If you have the Hue working with the Hue Homebridge plugin or even the Philips one, then you use Homekit via an app (Eve) to setup the scene. You don't need to write your own plugin to do what you are trying to so. Unless all you want to do is a colorloop, because that is built into the Hue Bridge. I would avoid the animation side of things, there are various apps that do a much better job of it.
